Launch Your Career in Forestry

There are several steps to follow in order to launch your forestry career.

1. Learn about the profession
Find out as much as you can about forestry. Do some research on the Internet, talk to a career counsellor at your school or a forest professional in your area. If you need help finding a professional in your area, search using our member directory.

2. Choose an accredited program
The education requirements vary depending on whether you decide to become a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) or a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT). Start thinking about the program you want to take soon because many have high school math and science prerequisites.

Most people who are RPFs have a bachelor of science in forestry or natural resource management from an accredited program. UBC and UNBC both offer four-year programs that meet all the course requirements for becoming an RPF. See the Registered Professional Foresters page for more information on this designation.

Most people who are RFTs have a two-year forest technology diploma from an accredited program. See the Registered Forest Technologists page for more information on this designation.
