Transferring

There are several options available to forest professionals wishing to transfer into the Association of BC Forest Professionals:
1. AIT and TILMA Option
2. Special Permit - Transferring Professional Forester Option

1. AIT and TILMA
In compliance with the federal Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT), and the provincial Labour Mobility Agreement between British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, regulatory bodies, such as ours, are required to mutually recognize the qualifications of forest professionals from other Canadian jurisdictions.

a)Transferring Professional Foresters
If you are a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) from another Canadian jurisdiction, you may qualify for recognition as Registered Professional Forester in BC and be entitled to full practice rights in BC under  federal labour mobility provisions. The flow chart below describes the process in detail.

b)Transferring Forest Technologists
If you are a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) from Alberta or Saskatchewan, you may qualify for recognition as a Registered Forest Technologist in BC and be entitled to full practice rights in BC under the labour mobility provisions of TILMA. The flow chart below describes the process in detail.  If you are transferring from a province other than Alberta or Saskatchewan and want to become a Registered Forest Technologist in BC, you must go through the regular RFT application process.

See the Transferring Forest Professional Process Flow Chart for more information.

2. Special Permit - Transferring Professional Forester Option
If you are a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) from another Canadian jurisdiction, you may qualify for a special permit to practise in BC until such time as you pass the RPF registration exam and become an RPF in BC. If your special permit application as a Transferring Professional Forester is granted, you will receive certain rights of title and either full or partial rights of practice.

More details about special practice permits can be found in our bylaws and on the Special Practice Permits page.
