Articling Requirements

During the enrolment period, Foresters-in-Training, Forestry Pupils and Trainee Forest Technologists are required to obtain a minimum number of months of relevant work experience under the supervision of a registered member. This will help you be better prepared for registration and the rights and obligations of a practising professional.

Refer to the Registration Policy for compete details on articling requirements:
Registration Policy

Purposes of Articling Requirements
Expose you to a wide range of professional forestry practice;
Enable you to develop professional practice skills under the guidance of your sponsor and other registered members; and
Sensitize you to the rights and obligations of a practising professional including those under the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice (which are binding on all members).

Acceptable Work Experience
You should gain broad work experience covering as many of the areas of practice defined in the Foresters Act as possible. Your sponsor is expected to assist you in this regard and the Articling Policy also provides resources that can help.
Articling Policy

Any experience you gained before you applied for membership does not count toward the requirement. We will not normally consider work that is not directly related to professional practice (such as wood processing, agriculture, landscape gardening, horticulture, marketing, etc.). Volunteer work may count toward the requirement. A certain amount of work carried on outside British Columbia may count toward the requirement. A master’s degree or doctorate degree may count toward the requirement.

Minimum Work Experience Before Writing the Registration Exam
Normally, you must have completed all of your work experience requirements before writing the Registration Exam. However, if you will have less than six months of work experience requirement remaining at the date of the Registration Exam, you may write the exam provided that you have already completed all of your necessary core competency requirements.
