Enrolled members (foresters-in-training, forestry pupils and trainee forest technologists) working toward registration in British Columbia must gain a minimum number of months of relevant work experience under the guidance of a sponsor as they prepare to become a professional. Active, registered members are needed to sponsor enrolled members during this articling period. This is an excellent mentoring opportunity for you to help a developing forest professional learn the ropes and prepare for eventual registration.

What’s Involved?
As a sponsor, you must adhere to the Articling Policy and ensure the enrolled member you sponsor does the same. Generally, as a sponsor, you must do the following:

  • Meet regularly with your enrolled member;
  • Ensure your enrolled member understands what it means to be a professional;
  • Ensure your enrolled member completes his or her practice diary and review it regularly to make sure he or she gains the necessary work experience required for professional status;
  • Ensure your enrolled member is ready for the registration exam;
  • Complete an annual evaluation form on your enrolled member.

Eligibility & Criteria
Only active, registered members (RPFs and RFTs who have written and passed the registration exam) may act as sponsors. RPFs can sponsor candidates for eventual registration as an RPF or as an RFT. RFTs can only sponsor candidates for eventual registration as an RFT.
