Self-Assessment

Self-Assessment is the first element of the continuing competency program. The purpose of a self-assessment is to provide a tool for members to evaluate their professional competencies, identify learning needs and develop an action plan to address these learning needs.

Who is Required to Complete a Self-Assessment Annually to Renew His/Her ABCFP Membership?
All associate members, registered members, conditional registered members, transferring forest professionals, members with special permits for limited licenses granted with a permit term of three years or more must complete a self-assessment within one year after they become registered or receive their permit or limited license. Registered members on leave of absence are not required to complete a self-assessment until the time of their reinstatement.

A self-assessment must be completed annually, after major career and legislative changes or as deemed necessary.

Who is Not Required to Complete a Self-Assessment?
Registered members on leave of absence, enrolled members, retired members, life members and honorary members are not required to complete a self-assessment. Enrolled members are also not required to complete a self-assessment, but they are encouraged to participate in this element to become familiar with the process. Enrolled members (FIT, ASFIT, TFT, ASTFT, FP) who passed the registration exam and received registered status this year do not have to complete a self-assessment until fall of next year.

Update: Members who do not do practise professional forestry are not required to complete a self-assessment but must complete the Professional Practise Questionnaire and submit a Declaration of Non-Practise.

Self-Assessment Declarations and Declarations of Non-Practise are Due Annually on December 1
You must declare that your self-assessment has been completed by December 1st, which is the due date for ABCFP membership renewals. If your Self-Assessment Declaration is not been received in the ABCFP offices by January 31st, you will be subject to administrative fees.

Important: If your Self-Assessment Declaration or Declaration of Non-Practise is not received by March 31st, you will be removed from the membership rolls and not entitled to practise forestry in BC.

How do I complete a Self-Assessment?

1. Review the Self-Assessment Guide
This guide is intended to clarify what is required in each section of the self-assessment process and provides instructions on how to complete your Self-Assessment Form, prepare a Professional Development Plan and submit your Self-Assessment Declaration.

2. Complete the Professional Practise Questionnaire
The Professional Practise Questionnaire must be completed by all applicable members and determines whether or not you practise professional forestry.

3. Submit a Declaration of Non-Practise
If you answer “no” to all questions on the Professional Practise Questionnaire, you must submit a Declaration of Non-Practise. You are not required to complete a Self-Assessment Form and Professional Development Plan and do not submit a Self-Assessment Declaration.

4. Complete the Self-Assessment Form
If you answer “yes” to at least one question on the Professional Practise Questionnaire, you must complete a Self-Assessment Form which has a series of statements designed to help you assess your practice and identify learning needs.

5. Complete a Professional Development Plan
Once you have completed the Self-Assessment Form, you must develop a Professional Development Plan to implement during the upcoming year.

6. Keep Copies on File
Keep a record of all self-assessment documents for six years. Do not send these documents to the association. You may be asked to produce them if you have been chosen for a Mandatory Practice Review.

7. Make Your Self-Assessment Declaration by December 1st
You can declare that your self-assessment has been conducted by submitting a Self-Assessment Declaration. Declarations can be submitted online or by mail or fax.

Do I have to fill out the Self-Assessment Form if I don’t practise forestry?

If you do not practise forestry, you are not required to complete a self-assessment but must make a Declaration of Non-Practise. Review the information on this page for details.

When are Declarations of Non-Practise due?
If required to complete a Declaration of Non-Practise, it is due December 1 of each year. Like membership fees, your Declaration of Non-Practise is due the first day of the ABCFP’s new fiscal year. After that date, they are considered to be late and administrative fees may be applied.
