Professional Reliance: Is It Working? How It Should Work?
The Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) outlines end results for forest practices but relies on the professional judgment of resource professionals to practice due diligence and good stewardship of forest land. Forest land stewardship rests on sound ecological principles that are necessary to sustain the forest's ability to provide the values that have been assigned by society. Is professional reliance working so the provincial government has confidence in maintaining results-based forest practices legislation instead of going back to procedures-based legislation? There are good examples of professional reliance working but our members still have questions about how the practice of professional reliance can be improved.
About this Workshop
This workshop explores what professional reliance means to participants, its legal foundation and its definition, how it compares to professional deference and how it is related to professional accountability. Various professional reliance scenarios will be presented for participants to work through by choosing different decisions based on the information they are given.
Participants will have a chance to discuss local professional reliance issues and engage in dialogue about how professional reliance should work on our online discussion forum after they have completed the workshop. This discussion will be facilitated by Brian Robinson, RPF, manager of professional development and member relations, ABCFP.

Working Effectively with Aboriginal Peoples™
With the growing importance of Aboriginal issues in the province, the association recognizes that forest professionals must be effective in working with Aboriginal peoples. The ABCFP will soon require that members can prove their competency for working with Aboriginal peoples if their jobs entail it. In order to help members become competent in this important area, the ABCFP worked with Indigenous Corporate Training Inc. to bring you this online workshop .
This classic Aboriginal cross cultural awareness training program has been field tested with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples and is designed to help people work effectively with Aboriginal peoples by getting beyond Aboriginal awareness to practical skills and tools that can be applied everywhere.
This online training provides a review of historical events and their relation to the present economic environment; explores critical issues of taxation, housing, and education; shows how working with Aboriginal peoples can enhance your career and help your business; and help you understand cross-cultural perspectives.
