Associate Members

There are presently two subgroups of associate members: timber cruisers and silviculture surveyors. Timber cruisers include Accredited Timber Cruisers (ATCs) and Accredited Timber Evaluators (ATEs) and have been accredited either through the ASTTBC or the ABCFP. Silviculture surveyors have been accredited through the Ministry of Forests and Range and are called Silvicultural Accredited Surveyors (SASs).

What is an ATC?
ATCs are Timber Cruisers whose job is to provide the best estimate of volume, quality, species composition and value of the timber resource. They have a minimum of two years field experience and competencies and are responsible for recording, supervising and instructing subordinates, with a minimum of supervision. An ATC is a person who has met the required competencies for certification and who practices at the required level established by the association.

What is an ATE?
Like an ATC, ATEs are Timber Cruisers whose job is to provide the best estimate of volume, quality, species composition and value of the timber resource. They have a senior or supervisory role with a minimum of five years experience and competencies and are responsible for organizing, training, quality assurance and reporting of results. An ATE is a person who has met the required competencies for certification and who practices at the required level established by the association.

What is a SAS?
An SAS must be accredited through the Silviculture Survey Accreditation Process from the Ministry of Forests and Range's Forest Practices Branch before becoming an ABCFP associate member.

They make use of silviculture plans and prescriptions and other information to conduct or confirm the stratification of a survey unit, ensure the accuracy and thoroughness of data collection and mapping, confirm and identify additional critical site factors that may influence the attainment of management objectives set out in plans, and make preliminary recommendations for future treatment (The Silviculture Survey Accreditation Process, Forest Practices Branch).

Becoming an Associate Member
Joining the ABCFP as an Associate Member is voluntary. Once accepted into the ABCFP, ATCs and ATEs will have similar rights and obligations as registered members. They must conform to the requirements outlined in the Foresters Act, resolutions of council, bylaws, and policies and procedures published by council from time-to-time.
